Client-centered therapy services

Throughout my career as a therapist, I have been committed to working with individuals, couples and families to help them find healthier, more successful lives. If you choose to work with me you will experience a confidential environment where feelings are expressed and a bond of trust is established.

  • Struggling with depression or anxiety?

  • Struggling with a relationship?

  • Problems with accomplishing personal goals?

  • Grieving over a loss?

  • Having conflicts at work?

When I work with individuals in crisis my goal is to help them discover the source of their pain and then we work to find options for relieving that pain. I deeply believe that the answers are, ultimately, in the client and it is my job to listen, reflect back what I hear, and then explore options together.

My work with individuals is anchored in Family Systems Therapy. Developed by American psychologist, Dr Murray Bowen in the 1950’s. It is based on a theory that the family of origin has a life-long impact on how a person develops, how they form relationships and how they see themselves in relationship to others. We often address family of origin issues because these can present stumbling blocks to later relationships in adult life.

  • Feeling like you are constantly arguing over the same subjects?

  • Trying to decide whether to stay in a marriage?

  • Feeling like your partner doesn’t understand what you say?

  • Feeling lonely in your current relationship?

My approach to working with couples draws on the research-based work of Dr John Gottman. As a *Gottman trained therapist, I give Seattle couples a toolbox of skills to help them improve the way they communicate. The key to better communication is based in being able to negotiate difficult, potentially conflictual subjects without hurting each other.

Though no two people can ever agree completely on everything, there is a way to discuss hot subjects calmly and to come to some conclusion. It takes commitment and practice.

  • Need help navigating a major life change?

  • Trying to manage a divorce without damaging family relationships?

  • Struggling with the loss of a loved one?

  • Trying to adjust to a change in your child such as adolescence?

Undesired change - whether it is a divorce, a death or even a move - can be extremely stressful and emotionally charged for families. I work with families to explore what their options are for successfully navigating through this change. Understanding that families come in all configurations and types, I work as a negotiator to help them explore how they want to come to a resolution. My goal is to move the family through this major life change to a more functional family structure as quickly as possible.

Whenever possible, I require that all family members attend the first session. This allows me to observe how the family system works and how each person interacts with each other. Often clues are non-verbal.
